It is a water heater left venting alone into a chimney that was sized for it plus a furnace or boiler. Without the larger appliance's exhaust, the flue may never warm enough to draft properly.

Because the new equipment's venting plan has to account for whatever stays on the old chimney. A liner or a different venting arrangement is often part of the job.

Moisture or staining at the flue connection, and a musty odor near the appliance. Those warrant a technician rather than observation.

Roughly 70 percent predate 1980 here, and the older blocks in Troy are similar, so shared masonry flues are everywhere in this stock.
