Radiators Not Heating

Cold rooms in a house that's otherwise heating usually means something local in that loop, so call and mention which rooms are affected.

What a pro does

Cold radiators with a working boiler point downstream rather than at the heat source. On steam, a clogged or seized air vent leaves air sitting in the radiator with nowhere to go, and steam simply cannot enter a space that air already occupies. On hot water, the causes shift to trapped air at the high points, a seized valve, or a circulator that isn't producing enough flow to push the far end of a long loop. Big old houses complicate it. Systems that got extended into additions or subdivided over the decades often end up with one branch starved by piping nobody documented, and sorting that means mapping the loop rather than swapping parts.

Frequently asked questions

On hot water it usually means air has collected at the highest points of the system, since air rises to the top of a loop and blocks flow there first.
On steam it's typically water hammer, caused by condensate sitting in a pipe that lost its pitch and getting hit by incoming steam. The radiator is the messenger rather than the cause.
The bodies themselves last remarkably long. Vents and valves fail, along with the piping serving them, and those are the parts that actually get replaced.
On steam that backfires, because a partly open valve traps condensate and creates hammering. Balancing there is done with vents rather than by throttling the supply.
