Thermostat Not Working

An unresponsive thermostat may be sitting on top of a perfectly healthy system that simply isn't being told to run, so a call sorts out which side has actually failed.

When this becomes an emergency

What a pro does

Two circuits get separated first: the thermostat and everything behind it. A tech jumps the thermostat terminals at the equipment to see whether the burner responds, and that single test settles in a minute whether the control is at fault or the heating system is. Wiring is next, and it's where old houses bite. Low-voltage cable stapled through joists decades ago goes brittle, corrodes at the terminals, or gets nicked by later work, and any of that makes a healthy thermostat look dead. Smart thermostats add their own failure mode, since older wiring frequently lacks the constant-power conductor those units expect and the thermostat browns out instead of holding its call for heat.

Frequently asked questions

Batteries first, then the low-voltage supply from the equipment. Both are quick to check and together they account for most dark thermostats.
Those units draw continuous power that older two-wire installations were never run for, and without that conductor the thermostat cycles itself off at the worst moments.
Often it's placement instead. Sun on the wall, a draft from a stairwell, or a nearby register makes the sensor read a temperature the rest of the house never experiences.
Only after the wiring and the equipment's own response have been checked, because a new thermostat on a broken circuit behaves exactly like the old one did.
